In some professions, change happens slowly. Writers have been crafting books the same way since Shakespeare. Cleaning products change, but housekeeping doesnt. The human anatomy has remained the same for several millennialuckily for the health care industry. Other professions, such as that of a digital marketer, are new and constantly changing. If youre using the same strategies today you used a year ago, youre already outdated.
Youre still relying on basic email marketing
How do you know when your digital marketing strategies have become obsolete? One way to tell is if youre still renting email lists, according to Jason Bowden, the chief consultant at Digital-Warriors Consulting. He also discourages marketers from placing too much emphasis on basic email marketing. Technology and social media allow you much greater flexibility than you once had.
A better way of using email marketing campaigns, Bowden said, is to launch direct email marketing and requesting customers to obtain an email subscription about the latest news and updates about your business. However, he recommends social media as a higher form of engagement that has better results for lead-gathering for your business.
Your SEO strategy is comprised of loading web pages with keywords
SEO isnt simple, and it definitely doesnt just mean tagging every possible keyword under the sun on every blog article or product description anymore. That strategy passed with the digital stone ages. Today, search engine algorithms are far too intelligent to rank your web page higher just because you have high quantities of keywords.
These days, Bowden said, Digital marketers are forced to engage with a more tedious optimization process using contextual analysis and high quality content other than doing keyword research. That doesnt mean keywords are dead, but it does mean they cant be the keystone of your SEO.
Your blog is the only way you incorporate content marketing
There are far too many different ways to incorporate content marketing into your business for you to rely solely on a blog. High quality and frequent articles do attract some viewers, but people like variety, so mix up your routine by adding video, infographics, and other media to infuse your content with extra interest. If you can attract attention with a nicely timed viral video, visitors to your site are more likely to hang around and check out your other content.
